Test Principle

The semi-quantitative FlowSense test works on the principle of competition between a target antibiotic in the honey sample and a labelled counterpart for binding sites on the test strip. The intensity of the detectable marker on the test line is inversely proportional to the concentration of the target antibiotic in the sample. Higher concentrations of the antibiotic in the sample result in less binding of the labelled analyte and consequently to weaker signal intensity on the test line.

A control line, consisting of immobilized molecules that bind the labelled target regardless of the presence of the antibiotic in the sample, confirms the proper functioning of the test.
