    MONKEYPOX vs MPOX - differences and diagnostic solutions

    23.08.2024

    Do you know if there is any difference between the terms “monkeypox” and “mpox”?

    If you consider that the second word is just the short name of the disease, you are wrong! In 2022 the World Health Organization (WHO) renamed this illness from “monkeypox” to “mpox” due to the wide spread of misinformation among the population that the original source of the disease is the monkey. The name “monkeypox” was introduced in 1958 when the virus was discovered for the first time in some monkey colonies. Though, the original source remains unknown.

    As you are probably already familiar with, mpox is a current topic in Central Africa because of the appearance of the new more dangerous clade I of the virus.

    “As a result of the rapid spread of this outbreak in Africa, ECDC has increased the level of risk for the general population in the EU/EEA and travelers to affected areas. Due to the close links between Europe and Africa, we must be prepared for more imported clade I cases,” says Pamela Rendi-Wagner, Director of ECDC.

    Symptoms: fever, headache, muscle ashes, skin rashes (vesicles or papules)

    Virus transmission:

      ·close contact with skin rashes of an infected person;

      ·spread through the air by droplets when continuous contact with an infected person;

      ·spread through infected surfaces;

      ·sex contact.

    As always, we are here to offer you comprehensive solutions for fast, accurate and affordable diagnostics.
