The Dangers of Nile River - West Nile Fever

    04.09.2024

The crocodiles inhabiting the Nile River are not the only danger that lurks there.

Until the middle of the 20th century, West Nile fever was found only in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. The virus was first isolated in 1937 from a woman who lived around the west bank of the Nile River. This is how the disease got its name. In recent years, however, it has been actively expanding its areas of coverage. In 1999 it was also registered for the first time on the American continent. Nowadays it is also common in Europe.

The natural carriers of the virus are birds, and mosquitoes can easily become infected after biting such a bird. Therefore, people get West Nile fever if they are bitten by such an infected mosquito.

Many countries on the Old Continent report confirmed cases of the fever this summer season. In Bulgaria, so far, two deaths of people infected with the virus have been established. But a fatal outcome is rare. About 80% of infections in humans occur without symptoms, 29.5% have a flu-like manifestation and 0.5% of those infected go through a severe fever, their nervous system can also be affected (development of encephalitis, meningoencephalitis).

    Common symptoms:

  • high temperature
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • body aches
  • runny nose
  • vomiting
  • skin rash
  • swollen lymph nodes

  • Transmission of the virus:

  • bite from an infected mosquito
  • in contact with other infected animals, their blood or tissues
  • a small number of infections due to organ transplantation, blood transfusion, breastfeeding
  • no documented cases of human-to-human viral transmission

  • Precautions:

  • use of repellents
  • wearing long clothes
  • placing nets on windows and doors
  • avoiding outdoor activities during the hours when mosquitoes are most active
