As you know, coughing and sneezing are natural defense mechanisms of the respiratory system.

However, when these mechanisms become more frequent or are accompanied by clinical symptoms such as fever, a runny nose, or a sore throat, it is crucial to differentiate between physiological processes and pathological conditions. Such assessments are particularly critical during flu season when infectious pathogens can easily compromise normal respiratory function.

According to the National Center of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (NCIPD):

"During the 47th week of 2024 (November 18–22), the National Reference Laboratory for Influenza and ARI tested 70 clinical samples from patients with acute respiratory infections (ARI) using Real-Time PCR. The results confirmed 2 cases of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, 3 cases of influenza A(H3N2), and 4 cases of SARS-CoV-2.

Additionally, 48 clinical samples were tested for 8 non-influenza respiratory viruses, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), parainfluenza viruses (PIV) types 1/2/3, adenoviruses (ADV), rhinoviruses (RhV), and bocaviruses (BoV).

The results revealed 7 cases of parainfluenza virus type 1, 1 case of parainfluenza virus type 2, 1 case of parainfluenza virus type 3, 10 cases of rhinoviruses, 3 cases of adenoviruses, and 6 cases of bocaviruses."

These data indicate that Bulgaria is on the threshold of the new flu season. According to experts, between 10% and 20% of the country's population is expected to contract the flu this year.
